Startup demo day season has already begun
YSpace demo day, startup patterns, and a track to listen to while reading the newsletter.
Well it's mid-September and we're already seeing startup demo days, which is crazy fast. I had the opportunity to attend the YSpace demo day for their 2024 accelerator cohort. Decelerator is a part of this innovation hub. It's interesting, and worth an essay some day, to see the kinds of companies that are being built these days. Here's the initial pattern I'm seeing. Let me know if you agree:
- those that leverage new technology and push to the early adopter crowd (AI goes here; the old fashioned startup 🥃),
- those that are focused on finding product-market fit in a busy space but either their go-to-market is different or at this point in the universe, the market is ready to consider these solutions,
- founders who are subject matter experts and tech is easy (commodified) enough to spin up that their insights and relationships give them an unfair advantage,
- those that are further sub-segmenting the market with solutions that are hyper-specialized addressing needs even other startups are not focusing on.
Do these buckets resonate with you? What's missing? What's not right?
A Weekend Listen
I happened to see Vampire Weekend this week, and their new album is great. This is one of the best tracks IMHO. Have a listen!
Still Recruiting...
Like last week, one quick ask: we're busy recruiting guests and expect to launch ASAP, but if you know of any investors or entrepreneurs outside of Canada who are building their tech companies differently, details here, send them our way!
